Adolescents and conduct disorders

One of the main psychological problems that many adolescents face is the fact that they suffer from conduct disorders..

In general, they tend to appear more in boys than in girls, and have a very big impact on various areas of their life: poor school performance, family and social relationships are damaged, and of course, young people suffer. of this situation.

    Behavioral disorders start in childhood

It is a misconception that these disorders in young people start in adolescence. At this point is when they are most obvious as they sharpenBut from childhood, the behavioral disorder is there, in a latent state. Sometimes the symptoms are so severe that it is very difficult to treat them. To do this, it is best to have professionals with experience in the field.

Although these behaviors occur and can be diagnosed, the origin of this class of psychological disorders is not well known.. However, some risk factors are known, such as certain personality types and temperaments, genetic aspects and those of the environment in which the young person is raised and lives, etc.

The main behavioral disorders in adolescents have historically been ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), TND (Difficult Negative Disorder), and CT (Behavioral Disorder or Dissocial Disorder). However, ADHD has long been considered a neurodevelopmental disorder.

Adolescents and behavioral disorders: variants of this problem

Although, as we have noted, ADHD is considered a neurodevelopmental disorder, we will include it in this classification because it affects many young people and strongly influences their behavior. Let’s take a look at the three we mentioned earlier.

    1. ADHD

This disorder is neurobiological, as it is caused by a lack of regulation of neurotransmitters. It affects the prefrontal cortex and the limbic system, which is why it was included in the list of neurodevelopmental disorders. However, this often leads to a consultation with many young people.

A typical symptomatology of ADHD is constant hyperactivity, inability to maintain attention for a long time, and excessive impulsivity. This makes the young person unable to think before acting. Likewise, this behavioral disorder also leads to a lack of self-control, willpower or intolerance to feel frustrated.

    2. TDN

Negative provocative disorder is a pattern that lasts at least 6 months. During this period, the young person lives a state of mind marked by aggression, irritability, as well as disobedience and a feeling of revenge. This disorder can be reflected in the behavior of the adolescent not only towards his nearest circle.

According to the DSM-5, Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, TDN carries a risk of developing severe anxiety and depression.

    3. CT or behavioral disorder

The consequences of CT or conduct disorders are reflected in a behavior that is repeated in the young, which makes him disrespect the fundamental rights of others, Social conventions, laws or simply rules imposed by others, such as parents. In addition, it usually results in an addiction problem.

Treatment of conduct disorders in adolescents

The diagnosis of all these psychological phenomena is based on the evaluation of all the symptoms by a professional. It must be considered that children and teens are more likely to show symptoms of mental illness because the altered behaviors are identified and, therefore, when faced with a so-called bad behavior, it is important to analyze whether there is a deeper underlying cause.

The only time psychopharmacological treatment is recommended is in the most difficult cases and those in which other ADHD treatment has not worked. However, in these cases, the assessment and intervention of qualified professionals is necessary.
