To address the issue of depression, I would like us to look at the origin of the word; It helps us know a bit more about how it has been perceived over time.
When there was no information like today on mood swings, it was thought that everything revolved around magic and experiential therapies, like diets, walks, music, art… .
Depression, according to the origin of the Latin word “abatimiento”, is one of the oldest known diseases in the History of Humanity. It used to be called “melancholy” and the term was used until the Renaissance. In 1725, the word depression was used. With the advent of modern medicine, it is considered a form of mood disorder that does not allow us to lead a life or perform in the usual way.
Now It is estimated that 10% of the population will be depressed at some point in their life.. Today, due to various phenomena such as information overload, problems with the use of social networks, dynamics resulting from social movements or even environmental factors and new diseases, we can feel much more vulnerable to this condition at any time.
What experiences bring us closer to depression?
It is considered that for a person to reach a depressive state, he had to undergo at least one life change perceived as unpleasant. In this sense, a series of classifications has been proposed that can help us structure them.
1. Vital Changes
These refer to a life change in which the individual is negatively affected; a failed relationship, illness, job loss or inconsistency, etc.
2. Accumulation of small losses
These are small moments over time they become more and more constant until a tolerance limit is reached.
3. Breaking behavior changes
They occur during environmental changes such as: change of domicile, place of residence, change of school, change of job, change of social or family circle…
4. Increased quantity or quality of aversion
There is an increase in negative aspects in the environment, such as increased work, exam pressure, stress, toxic relationships, health crises…
5. Loss of symbolic reinforcers
There are circumstances that make people stop believing in values like justicea religious belief or something important in what one believed.
The elements that keep us away from depression
There are other factors that also affect the person and can help overcome depression, such as the following.
The person must find an emotional balance; when the negative factors weigh more is when the symptoms of depression appear.
To counter this, it is important that people do enjoyable activitiesand interact with people who are somehow uplifting and motivating instead of dragging down.
2. Increase your self-esteem
When we reach this aspect of life, we know that we are precious enough to aspire to exciting goals and we don’t allow ourselves to focus our thoughts on the negatives presented to us. In this way, we can solve the problems around us and not take the bad things that happen to us seriously, to avoid affecting us so deeply. Notice, I’m not saying we don’t care about these experiences, but we are looking at other perspectives to constructively address the difficulties.
3. Eliminate guilt
We are often immersed in guilt, and mitigating it is important in order to take control of the situation and not be paralyzed by discomfort.
4. Seek adequate social support
Perhaps many of us feel like we don’t belong in a group, or even our family, where we sometimes feel inadequate. But with the support of a professional we can greatly improve social skills or even eradicate this style of thinking that fuels pessimism and loneliness.
5. Avoid drug addiction
We have always talked about the harmful effects that narcotics and/or alcohol can cause. Over the years we see its use as something everyday; It is common for someone to reject a drink and feel socially out of place.
But let me tell you that in addition to the physical damage that drugs do to the body, the mood plummets to the bottom of the sea; They seem to lift our spirits, but ultimately what they do is depress us..
If we add this to our emotional state of depression, a very harmful cocktail is created.
Faced with such combinations of problems, it is necessary to contact a professional to be able to properly attack the root problem.
6. Avoid social media abuse
Maybe you follow people who bring up this feeling of depression and you didn’t realize it. It’s good unfollow certain accounts that elicit these negative feelings.
Do not compare yourself to anyone, what you see on social networks should not influence your mood. To achieve this I invite you to raise your self-esteem, and remember that it is very important to continue on your path without always having to look aside.
