The posture in which couples sleep in bed and the distance of separation they maintain between the two can be an indicator of the level of happiness and fullness the relationship is experiencing.
At least that’s what emerges from a study commissioned by the American psychologist Richard wiseman, From the University of Hertfordshire (UK), and the results were published at the Edinburgh International Science Festival.

However, this research has managed to draw some interesting conclusions after examining the habits of more than a thousand people in terms of the quality of the emotional relationship and its correlation with certain rest habits:
- 42% of the couples studied generally sleep with their backs to each other.
- 31% sleep sideways on the same side.
- Only 4% of the total rests face to face.
- 34% sleep while maintaining physical contact.
- 12% sleep at a distance of less than 2.5 centimeters.
- 2% sleep with a separation of 75 centimeters or more.
Some curious conclusions

He established that couples who have a sweeter time and who live the relationship to the fullest are those who sleep face to face and maintain physical contact.
In case they aren’t touching each other while they are resting, a good indicator of the quality of the relationship is that they are sleeping on the same side. “93% of couples who sleep in contact report feeling very happy in the relationship, while the percentage has fallen to 68% among couples who don’t sleep while maintaining physical contact,” says Wiseman, who argues that couples who sleep at a distance of more than 75 centimeters have expressed their dissatisfaction in the relationship.
The research also managed to draw some interesting conclusions: the people with the highest score in extroversion are those who prefer to sleep close to their partner, while the more creative participants usually fall asleep on their left side. Dunkell discovered years ago that sleeping upside down was an indicator of self-confidence and extroversion, or sleeping upside down was a sign of a perfectionist. Sleeping cross-legged may indicate that this is a person with a tendency to compromise, and the position of the fetus is linked to indecision, lower than average self-esteem, and a certain predisposition to anxiety.
