We spend a large part of our life sleeping and while we sleep we are presented with all kinds of visions, images and scenes, in other words, we dream.
Dreams are very diverse. We can dream of practically anything, situation, person… There are those who claim to have dreamed in the same way that one of their acquaintances, others who had premonitions or a parent who went in. the hereafter showed up in his dream world to ask – that he complete his last wishes.
We could make a list of virtually infinite kinds of dreams depending on what is shown to us; however, we have chosen to create a nature-based classification of dreams. We find out what types of dreams exist.
What are dreams and how can they be classified?
We spend about 25 years of our life sleeping. Of all this time that we sleep, it is inevitable that at some point we dream, being the estimate that we spend about 8 years of our life immersed in our dream world. What we dream of varies from person to person and of course, as they say, “dreams, dreams are”.
But what do we mean by sleep? The most precise and scientific definition is that these are projections of images generated by our brain that we “see” while we sleep, a time when our minds seem to be resting but at the same time we remain in a state of consciousness, although disconnected from what is happening around us.
While we are sleeping to rest, it does not mean that we turn off our brains. Our brain never stops (it would be very worrying to do so) and in fact we have seen that during the night our mind can be very active.
Our dream is divided into two phases: the REM phase and the non-REM phase. The REM phase (“rapid eye movements”) is the phase during which rapid eye movements occur. This phase makes up about 25% of the sleep cycle, entering it about 4 or 5 times a night, first doing so around 90 minutes after falling asleep. In contrast, the non-REM phase accounts for about 75% of sleep cycles and is the phase without rapid eye movements.
It is during the REM phase that the memory is consolidated, this is the moment when what will be part of the long-term memory is selected. In other words, while we are in the REM phase we forget or keep information that was captured during the wake, information that we can dream of.
Everyone is free to make sense of their dreams. Regardless of what they may mean, it’s a fact that dreams are fascinating because, although they are so everyday, they are still sources of mystery and big questions, which has motivated some people to give it a try. to interpret them, while science is not very optimistic about whether they really make real sense.
The diversity of dreams that we can have is immense, since based on our imagination, we can dream of anything, any situation and any person. We can both be the protagonists of our dreams and have another person, real or invented, take the lead. Whatever we are dreaming of, the truth is that dreams can be categorized based on how they present themselves and what they are. We can talk about different types of dreams, which are the ones we will see below.
Types of dreams (explained)
Now that we understand what dreams are, let’s talk about their types. The categories that we will see below do not form an official classification, but rather a grouping of the different groups in which we can include the visions presented to us while we sleep.
1. Conventional dreams
Conventional dreams these are the most common, those which deal with problems of our daily life or which interest us. People, experiences and things that are a part of our daily life take center stage, although when we get up we usually forget what they are.
Maybe we dream of our family, of traveling to a new place, of flying, of being chased, of taking an ESO math exam… anything and any situation can appear there, but they have in common that ‘these are more or less conventional, typical situations.
2. Recurring dreams
Recurring dreams these are the ones that are repeated several times, both on the same night and on different nights.
They are curious dreams that are experienced more or less exactly the same time and again, repeating the same actions, being the same people and having the same situations every time. They are not always exact copies of each other, but the degree of alteration is usually minimal.
Nightmares they are unpleasant dreams in which situations of danger, panic and discomfort can appear to us. Hence, they are one of the most popular types of dreams at the popular level.
We don’t like having these kinds of dreams, as evidenced by the strongly negative emotional response they generate, especially in the form of fear, sadness, and anxiety. These are dreams that cause us to be terrified …
The causes are very varied, but among the main causes we have experienced traumatic events, being sick, having a heavy dinner, having bad eating habits, sleeping little, taking medication or suffering from sleep disorders. They can also appear for no apparent reason, and if we have nightmares every now and then we don’t have to worry because everyone does at some point.
4. Lucid dreams
Lucid dreams these are dreams in which we are fully aware that we are dreaming. Typically, we wake up the moment we realize we are dreaming, although this is not always the case and surprisingly as it may seem, we can practice and practice the ability to turn our dreams into lucid ones.
It is striking to know that there are people who have such lucid dreams that it is not only that they are aware that they are dreaming, but that they can also control the dream, which is what it is. acts and what they do while they dream about it. During lucid dreams, we can control our body, our thoughts, and the events of the dream.
5. Premonitory dreams
Some call them premonitory dreams, but for the sake of power we can call them prophetic dreams or dream premonitions. It is those dreams in which we see something which, some time after having had the dream, what we dream of seems to have come true.
These are dreams that a good one could tell mystical, paranormal visions, which predict the future although science is more in favor of considering that it is simply a coincidence, that we dreamed of something and then that ‘ happened as it might not have happened. so.
There are those who say that more than being prophecies, what is really happening is that our subconscious is preparing for something that is likely to happen, without our realizing it. Our subconscious mind “talks” to us in dreams, making us dream about it, and after a while what it predicted would most likely happen.
But precognitive dreams aren’t the only seemingly paranormal dreams that exist. Many people report having mystical experiences while sleeping, in which they have claimed to have connected with other people’s minds or to have been visited by ghosts from the other world. Among these we have:
- Telepathic dreams: dreaming that you are communicating with us, whether it is a person or something.
- Shared dreams: that two or more people dream about the same thing at the same time.
- Visiting dreams: dreaming that a deceased loved one visits us while we are sleeping, in a very lucid way, to transmit his will to us before leaving for the afterlife.
6. The fakes awakenings
Sometimes it happens that we dream about life itself. We wake up, we look at the time on our cell phone, we prepare ourselves a tea, a shower and a pum! we find out that we are still in bed and all this has not happened.
This is called false awakening, a type of dream in which we see, with complete lucidity, how we wake up and start the day like every morning, then realize that it is actually our subconscious that made us a toy. These are dreams in which we dream that we wake up. Curious, right?
7. Wake up your dreams
Daydreams involve dreaming while we are awake. Some say they are dreams, while others do not consider them because the person is awake. Whatever they are, what is clear is that they relate to dreams and we can regard them as a special type in them.
It is said that a person has a “daydream” when they perceive immediate reality in a diluted way, as if they were having a very lucid dream despite being awake. It’s like she’s in some kind of hypnotic traffic, receiving visual stimuli but capturing them in an unreal way, like it’s hallucinations or something foreign to her.
8. Healing dreams
Healing dreams are those in which we are immersed in a situation in which we have the gift of being able to heal other people, whether through telepathy, telekinesis, or the gift of magic. These are dreams that they express our desire to be able to help others, to cure life-threatening illnesses or to solve a problem, disorder or disease from which we are suffering.
9. Metaphorical dreams
Metaphorical dreams, also called symbolic, are those dreams that represent a little of our life in the form of a situation that represents it, but not in a direct way. For example, let’s say a person is going through a very difficult time, where everything is going uphill. Perhaps while sleeping, he dreams that he is climbing a mountain, a geographical feature that represents the difficulties of his daily life.
Metaphorical dreams are preferred by psychological and parapsychological currents who believe that dreams can be interpreted. In fact, those in favor of dream interpretation consider almost anything we dream of as metaphorical dreams. 10. Creative and inspiring dreams
There are dreams which are very inspiring and which also bring creative ideas or the answer to our daily problems for which we could not find a solution while we were awake. These are dreams which, upon awakening, are experienced as if they were revelations.
A famous case of this type of dream is that lived by Paul McCartney, who says that he dreamed one day of a melody which, with a few adjustments, would become the famous song “Yesterday” by The Beatles. Another example, what happened to James Watson, who dreamed of two snakes coiling together, a revelation that would become his DNA model for which he would win the Nobel Prize.
